Disko Obscura in New Orleans

February 16, 2017 by Trafton

I first heard about Shadow (or Mighty Shadow) through David Byrne’s impressively out-there Luaka Bop label. After months of searching, I finally tracked down his “Sweet Sweet Dreams” at Disko Obscura, a new record shop in New Orleans’ Garden District with a nicely curated selection of funk, afrobeat, and electronic stuff.

Originally released in 1984, it was just reissued on Vinyl by Jamwax in December 2016. If you’re into High Fidelity lists, it’s considered by some as one of the best Caribbean disco albums of all time. Features tracks like “Moon Walking” and my personal fave, “D’Hardest” as a bonus.

I actually heard it in the wild for the first time at the Ace’s rooftop bar the night before. Glad to see him get a nod from the hipster hotel powers that be.

T & P – Garden of Tears

Newish release from Tim Sweeney at Beats in Space. Some good background on his long-running NYU radio show here.

Shadow – “D’Hardest”

February 4, 2017 by Trafton

Shadow is a Trinidadian soca/calypso legend and it is a tragedy that his music is not more popular outside the Caribbean.
